Boycott China with TV remote controls

From the London Free Press:
China has been repressing Tibet for almost 60 years and the rest of the world has not really cared that much.
That’s what makes calls for a boycott of the Beijing Olympics this summer so bizarre.
First, it won’t do any good.
Second, a boycott avoids the more significant question of whether economic sanctions should be imposed on China, as they were on South Africa during its apartheid regime.
Of course, unlike South Africa, cutting off trade with China would have a huge downside for western economies — which is why no one talks about it.
Third, boycotting the Olympics, assuming you’re not a world-class athlete, is a classic case of throwing someone else under a bus just so you can feel good.
Why should our Olympic athletes have to suffer for China’s actions?
They didn’t choose Beijing. The International Olympic Committee did (instead of Toronto, the second-place finisher for the Games) and when it did it was certainly aware of China’s dismal record on human rights — from Taiwan, to Tibet, to Tiananmen Square, to the repression of the Falun Gong.
Even the Dalai Lama, spiritual father of the Tibetan people, rejects a boycott of the Games.

This is holy bullshit. Go back to learn history and the reality
Holy Bullshit? I’m sure the London Free Press is accepting Letters to the Editor.
Laurie has a point about the athletes not choosing the location of the games and the unfairness of their participation used as political leverage.
Yet she also misses many valid ideas, one of which is that these are goodwill games sponsored by a country that shows no goodwill. Athletes should care about being used as propaganda tools by countries who use the athletes good will to corrupt ends.
The athletes who represent your country’s good will should demand the games be moved to a country that is true to the spirit for which they trained and compete.
It is a disservice to the athletes and most of all to the oppressed people of China to allow the games to occur there.
Meanwhile, there are many other countries where facilities already exist that could be used to host the games.
this is all such crap. athletes shouldn’t be punished, i agree but they also shouldn’t be representing their talent in a country that doesn’t show any goodwill to others, especially not their own country.
so yes holy bullshit indeed.
